Scripture Union Daily Guide 8 June 2020 Outline
It is common for African nations to declare national mourning following the death of a leader to show how deeply they felt the loss. In the same way David took up a lamentation over the death of King Saul and Jonathan, his friend. David sincerely grieved for King Saul and Jonathan. It was a national mourning for Israel and David emphasized that the lamentation be taught to the whole nation (v18).
Why did David feel so much grief for Jonathan (v.26)? Jonathan was more than a great friend. He did not only love David, but also turned against his father (King Saul) and risked his life in support of David (1 Samuel 20:30–34). Read vv.22–24 again and notice how David praised the bravery and character of King Saul and Jonathan in the battle field. For what else was King Saul remembered (v.24)? “How are the mighty fallen” (vv.25, 27).
No matter how strong and mighty we are, we will die one day. We need to always think about what those we leave behind will say about us, when we are finally gone and more so, what the Lord will say of us.
• And so: For what will you be remembered?
Today’s Prayer Points:
• Lord, help us to leave a godly legacy behind that will make people praise you when they remember us.
• Thank God for His love in preserving His church in the face of intense persecution in parts of the world such as Northern Nigeria and many Islamic nations.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Ephesians 1:18
Read the Bible in one Year: Jer. 12–14; Matt. 22:23–46
