Scripture Union Daily Guide 10th June 2020 – Zeal Without Experience
TODAY’S TOPIC: ZEAL WITHOUT EXPERIENCE
Open Prayer: As I read through this passage dear Lord, let your word bring transformation to my life.
Scripture: 2 Samuel 2:18 ─ 3:5
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
Yesterday, we saw that war is not the solution to disagreement. Alternative conflicts resolutions could and should be explored. The three sons of Zeruiah were mentioned with Asahel being the youngest (v.18). Notice the reason Asahel pursued Abner (v.19). Asahel was said to be “swift of foot” (ESV).
This shows the speed that Asahel had as a warrior. His decision to pursue Abner was rash. Could it be that he wanted to make history as the “killer” of Abner? What a careless waste of life and opportunity! Abner gave adequate and repeated warning to Asahel (vv.21–22), but Asahel ignored it. He relied on his swiftness but ran into his death.
Previous achievements can be deceptive, beware! Read vv.26–28 again. Notice how Abner’s timely words helped to bring the battle to an end. “A gentle answer turns away wrath ?” (Proverbs 15:1). Use words wisely. What can we learn from 3:1 about fighting against God’s purpose?
Chapter 3:2–5 show that family was important in Israel. Similarly, family is an important part of the community life in Africa. Thus, we need to cherish our families.
⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

• Lord, help me not to trust in my past exploits, but in you alone.
• Pray for wisdom upon leaders of the country to lead aright, with the fear of the Lord.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Genesis 6:8
Read the Bible in one Year: Jer. 18–19; Matt. 23:23–39
