Scripture Union Daily Guide 14th June 2020 – The Lord Who Establishes

TODAY’S TOPIC: THE LORD WHO ESTABLISHES

Open Prayer: I open my heart to meditate on your word, teach me your ways oh Lord.

Scripture: 2 Samuel 5:1–16

Reflection:
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?

Today’s Outline: Scripture Union Daily Guide 14th June 2020

What was the significant role played by David during King Saul’s reign which all Israel acknowledged (v.2)? Observe how it prepared and paved the way for David’s acceptance by all Israel as God’s anointed ruler (vv.1–3). “A man’s gift makes room for him ?” (Proverbs 18:16, NKJV).

Whatever gifts, talents, abilities, and grace God endows us with should be duly exercised for the benefit of his people; and in due season, it will usher us to greatness in his purposes. The Jebusites were deceived by their own thought that David would not be able to conquer their city (v.6). How was David able to access and conquer Jerusalem (vv.7,8)? What was the secret of David’s success (vv.2b,10, 12)?

Many people have misplaced confidence in what they possess, but the only sure defence is God alone (Psalm 62:6–8). V.13 shows a significant disobedience to God’s command by David. Many other Old Testament characters followed the same example, to their own hurt (See Deuteronomy 17:17). Their disobedience of the law is not an endorsement for us. If we disobey God’s command, we too will have ourselves to blame.

Practice/Word Application
• Thought: “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” (Psalm 20:7, ESV).

Backsliding
Backsliding in Christian context is a spiritual state where a Christian’s life faces downward trend. It is a process of slipping back into one’s former life. It is the dying down of one’s spiritual fervency. The Scripture clearly reveals that in the latter days because of the increase of sin and evils the love of many Christians for the scriptural truth and God’s stand would grow wary.

Prayer
• Make Psalms 31:17 your prayer.
• Pray that the lesson of the cross which is sacrificial giving of self, will help you to offer sacrificial service.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Genesis 15:1b

Read the Bible in one Year: Jer. 27–29; Matt. 25:31–46
