Scripture Union Daily Guide 7th September 2020 – Pursue Things of Eternal Values
OPENING PRAYER: Lord, I pray that you lead me into your truth as I meditate on your word in Jesus name.
SCRIPTURE: 1 Timothy 6:11–21
The Good Confession
11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
13 I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, 15 which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only [a]Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.
Instructions to the Rich
17 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. 18 Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, 19 storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
Guard the Faith
20 O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and [b]idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge— 21 by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith.

TODAY’S OUTLINE ON DAILY GUIDE 7TH SEPTEMBER 2020
There are things that last for eternity and those that are ephemeral or transient. Unfortunately, our values are often upside down. We pursue temporary things vigorously at the expense of the spiritual and eternal blessings. Read vv.11–12 again and identify the things Paul recommends we should run after.
These are the virtues that can help us build a just and equitable society. But holding on to our salvation and godly virtues, in this perverse generation, is not always easy. We must be ready to fight, and to guard our salvation and faith at all times (vv.12, 20a).
We must make up our minds to keep the commands of Christ our Lord till he returns (vv.14–15a), and turn away from godless doctrines and practices, no matter how appealing (vv.20–21). Meditate on vv.15b–16. Take note that God is not against wealth and riches neither does he consider poverty as godliness. However, he gives us guidelines on how to handle our wealth and riches. What specific guidelines can you see in vv.17–19 (cf. Matthew 6:20–21)?
⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

• Help me Lord to hold fast to my salvation and godly virtues, in this perverse generation, in Jesus name.
• Pray for the conversion of unbelieving members of your family and extended family. Pray that God will send them witnesses they can believe.
