MESSAGE: Scripture Union Daily Guide 16th October 2020
Apostle Paul is comparing the glories of two covenants in today’s reading. These are the dispensation of the Mosaic Law and dispensation of grace in Christ. Read v.7 again and notice that though the law has glory, yet it is referred to as ministry of death? The glory was temporal and passed away.
In v.8, the New Covenant is ministry of the Spirit and has exceeding weight of glory. Read vv.9–10 and discover more revelations about the New Covenant and the Old Covenant.
We have and are in a better covenant which is more glorious and everlasting. It is not as if the law of the old covenant was in any way bad or evil (cf. Romans 7:12,19). The problem was in the hearts and deeds of the people, who as law breakers, bring upon themselves, the condemnation of the laws and death penalty.
The ‘veil’ (v.14) is the hardness and dullness of people’s hearts which prevents them from recognising the saviour, Jesus Christ (c.f. John 1:14). However, that hardness is removed when a man comes to Christ (v.16). When this happens, v.18 becomes a reality; “transformed into Christ’s likeness, with ever–increasing glory.” This comes only through spiritual rebirth.
