Scripture Union Daily Guide 24th November 2020 – The Devastating Effects Of Sin

You are reading Today’s Scripture Union Daily Guide Devotional for Tuesday 24th November 2020. Be inspired by today’s reading. God bless you!

TOPIC: THE DEVASTATING EFFECTS OF SIN

Opening Prayer: Lord, let the light of your word shine into my life as I meditate on your word.

Scripture: Lamentations 4:1–22

Reflection:
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

MESSAGE: As we noted last Friday, today’s passage is again a clear demonstration of the truth that, “Sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34b).

Consider the following: Socio–economic disgrace (vv.1–5, 10): Notice the impact of sin on the socio–economic life of the sons of Zion Gold became worthless, only comparable to clay! Animals (jackals) were considered more humane than human beings. Children were neglected. Street life became the order of the day.

Political and governance disgrace (vv.6–8): Notice the contrast in appearance and condition of the princes. Public ridicule and disgrace (vv.12–15): The magnitude of the exposure, desolation and ridicule is unbearable Jerusalem being accessed by their enemies and foes. Sons of Zion groping in the streets like blind men.

Being chased away as ‘unclean’ by the Gentiles. Military or self–defence disgrace (vv.17–20): Notice the helplessness of their watchmen and guards. Their towers could no longer guarantee salvation and safety. They were stalked at every step. Their pursuers were swifter than them. Why does all this happen? See vv.11 and 16.

⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
