SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE 11 MAY 2022 DEVOTIONAL

Today’s Topic: God’s Promise Of A Son

Opening Prayer: Help me to understand the exceeding greatness of your power as I read through this passage, dear Lord.

Scripture: Genesis 15:1‐21

Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?

Daily Guide 11 May 2022 | Scripture Union Outline

What did God promise Abram (v.1)? Abram’s concern was to have a son lest his most senior servant becomes his heir. Notice how God responded and what Abram did (vs.5‐6). God promised Abram descendants and Abram in turn believed God wholeheartedly (Romans 4:1‐3; Hebrews 11:6). The second promise was land (v.7). Abram needed to be clear on how he can know that the land will be his.

How does Abram’s question in v.8 compare with Mary’s in Luke 1:34; Sarah’s (Genesis 18:12) and Zechariah’s (Luke 1:18)? God entertains honest enquiry but hates doubt and unbelief. Our God knows and holds the future (vs.13–16). Notice how God confirmed His promise to Abram (vs.9–12 and 17). Passing through the cut animal is similar to saying, ‘Let me die like this animal if I fail to fulfil the covenant.’

The ten nations listed (vs.19‐21) may be showing the complete expanse of the land space that God will provide for His people. It was not until the time of David and Solomon that the Israelites took possession of this expanse of land (see 2 Chronicles 9:26) but they lost much of it soon after because of their disobedience.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Lord, help me to believe what you promise, even if it appears impossible.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
Psalms 67:7; 1Samuel 15, 16, Matthew 2
