The admonition before the exchange of marriage vows is that it must not be undertaken carelessly or lightly but reverently after serious thought. The kingdom of God is freely given but we must take note of its serious demands on Christ’s followers (vs.26‐27). Note that Jesus’ call in v.26 is not to recruit suicide bombers. He is rather warning that following Him is not to be entered into carelessly, without serious thought for what it involves. The ‘cross’ designates the challenges we face in our Christian pilgrimage.
These vary from one Christian to another. For some it has meant loss of their lives. To draw larger crowds today, the cross is hardly mentioned in our pulpits. Instead, we are bombarded with an undue emphasis on prosperity and health. It is no wonder that the Church is making very little difference in the society. In a generation where there is so much rottenness, Christians must be active in being the salt of the earth and preserving godliness, lest we become useless and are thrown out.
