Topic: Dealing With Loss And Its Consequences

Opening Prayer: Lord, I pray that you lead me into your truth as I meditate on your word in Jesus name.

Judah recovered from grieving over the death of his wife to continue with life (v.12). Overcoming grief, particularly due to the loss of a dear one, can be very challenging. Paul gives us the principle that should direct our mourning in 1 Thessalonians 4:13‐18. Let us learn to hand over our pain to God. Then our “knock down” will not become a “knock out”.

Tamar felt unfairly treated by her father‐in‐law who reneged on his promise to give her his third son in marriage. She devised some strange schemes to entice Judah because of her strong desire to have children (v.16). Some people can go to any length to pursue their rights or desires, often throwing decency and sanity to the wind. Judah’s loneliness as a widower might have driven him into immorality that led him into Tamar’s trap (vs.15‐18).

This is a stern warning to widows and widowers who should take every precaution to avoid falling into sexual sin. See 1 Corinthians 7:8‐9 for Paul’s advice. Judah did not see any evil in hiring a harlot for a night yet was ready to execute Tamar (v.24). Does this not happen in the churches today? Elders pass harsh judgment on people who committed the same evil they too have committed in secret (2 Samuel 12:1‐7; Matthew 7:1‐5).

• Pray for people living with disabilities in Nigeria. Believe God that the Nigeria government and the various denominations will remember them and make provisions to make their lives easier to manage.
