SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE 24 APRIL 2022 DEVOTIONAL

Today’s Topic: Always Set A Good Example

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, grant me understanding and illumination as I ponder on your word in Jesus name.

Scripture: Genesis 9:18‐29

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any warning for me to heed?
• What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Message | Daily Guide 24 April 2022 | Scripture Union Devotional

We could say Adam was the father of the human race until the Flood and Noah became the father of the human race after the Flood. Noah was a commendable character. God testified to his being righteous (Genesis 7:1).

He obeyed God by building a ship, was consistent and a man of great faith. Noah was a pacesetter. After the flood, he started grape farming and wine making (v.20) but got drunk from something of his own invention (v.21). How could someone righteous by God’s standard also be drunk? He ended up cursing his grandchild, Canaan (v.25).

It can be easy to rest on our laurels and so slacken our guard and the devil catches us unaware. The Lord Jesus advises us to keep watching and praying (Matthew 24:43‐44). V.25 has been used to justify slavery and subjugation of Africans by other races but that is misplaced interpretation. It was not Ham who was cursed but Canaan.

Even if it was Ham, that would not justify slavery and inhuman treatment of any people. We need to set good examples in the church and society as believers by handling and practising the word of God correctly (Psalm 119:11). Slavery and other sins are perpetuated by parents who set bad examples for their children.

Practice/Word Application
Challenge: How do you treat your housemaids or people who work for you?

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Lord, please help me remain vigilant and alert so evil action does not catch me off‐guard.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
Psalms 37:11 Judges 3, 4, Psalms 48, 1Corinthians 2
