Read and Meditate on Today’s Scripture Union Daily Guide for Wednesday 25th May 2022. May the Lord bless you through His Word, Amen!

SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE 25 MAY 2022 DEVOTIONAL

Topic: Faithful Stewardship

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, expose me to your truth as I read your word in Jesus name.

Scripture: Luke 16:1‐15

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Read vs.1‐2. How was this servant managing the wealth entrusted to his care? Our Lord is not here commending dishonesty. The kind of shrewdness of this manager is worldly. The business world is full of such efforts to outsmart each other. In the kingdom of God, the end does not justify the means. Like the manager, however, we have different gifts, possessions and wealth apportioned to us by God. We do not own them.

We are only stewards and have possession of them for only a short period. We cannot afford to hoard them or put our trust in them. Rather we have the responsibility to utilise them in a way to make friends with God and prepare for eternity. The way we use our wealth here and now will determine our reward in heaven. See Matthew 6:19‐21, 24.

Wise use of our wealth will include supporting our church; helping the poor and needy; supporting the work of Christian ministries (e.g. Scripture Union) and other organisations (like Red Cross, Motherless Babies Homes, etc); and/or giving towards University education and research. See also 2 Corinthians 9:6‐10. Note that our generosity cannot earn us salvation. Only faith in Jesus Christ opens the gate of heaven for us. We are however, saved to do good works and receive eternal reward (Ephesians 2:8‐10). What is your take on vs.14 & 15?

Practice/Word Application
Thought: “He is not a fool who gives away what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” (John Elliot)
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Help me, dear Lord, to be a faithful manager of all you have entrusted to my care.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
Hebrews 13:20 ‐ 21; 2 Samuel 17, 18 Matthew 21
