TOPIC: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CROSS (I) – MFM April 1, 2021 Daily Devotional

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Numbers 21:4-9

MFM DAILY DEVOTIONAL 1ST APRIL 2021 OUTLINE:

One of the terrible consequences of sin is that it brings the wrath of God upon the sinner and opens the doorway for the enemy to attack him or her. In Numbers 21:4-9, the Bible reveals that the children of Israel again complained and murmured against God and Moses, His servant. Their complaint and ill-speaking were tantamount to ingratitude and unbelief.

God became angry with them and sent fiery serpents to their midst. The serpents killed many of them. Therefore, the people went to Moses to apologise and they told him to beg God on their behalf. When Moses interceded for them, God told him to make a brass serpent and hang it on a tree. He added that whosoever was bitten by the fiery serpent and would look at the brass serpent on the pole would be healed. Moses did as God commanded him.

From that time, as many as were beaten by the fiery serpent, who looked at the brass serpent on the pole, lived. This Old Testament story can be summarised as sin, its consequence, which is death, and the way out, which is salvation..In the story above, the pole and the brass serpent were the solution that God offered.

In John 3:14-16, Jesus said, “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Beloved, Jesus is the answer and solution to the problem of sin and its terrible consequences that the devil has brought upon mankind. Sin opened the doorway of sickness, poverty, pain, sorrow, the wrath of God and separation from Him, and so on. Besides, the wages of sin is death. That is why God in His matchless love for sinful and helpless man gave His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ as substitute to die on the cross at Calvary, and that whosoever believes in Him and His atoning sacrifice should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).

Truly, the cross, to us who are saved, is the power of God. Jesus’ life was laid down for yours and mine on the cross. There the Son of God paid all our debts, and earned us forgiveness and life!

Memory Verse: 1 Peter 2:24 – Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

Motivational Quote: Let us fix our eyes on Jesus the Author and Perfecter of our faith.

Prophetic Word: Henceforth, the victory of the cross will manifest in all areas of your life, in the name of Jesus.

HYMN: Old Rugged Cross

1. On a hill far away stood an old rugged
cross,
The emblem of suff’ring and shame;
And I love that old cross where the
dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.

Chorus
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

2. Oh that old rugged cross, so despised
by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His
glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.

3. In the old rugged cross, stained with
blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see;
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus
suffered and died
To pardon and sanctify me.s power?
Who like Thyself my guide and
stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, O
abide with me.
