Every choice made has its degree of consequence. A deeply wounded man who opted to walk out on the church and hastily contracted his marriage against the procedures of the church once remarked “when in disobedience, you walk out on the church and marry a wrong wife, it means Satan has settled you in life”. As funny as this may sound, the truth must be told and cannot be shielded from the consequences. Many of such cases are living in agony while others have simply chosen the option of taking their lives through suicide. Don’t be deceived, choices speak! Wrong choices KILL!!

THE PORTRAIT OF A MAN WITHOUT GOD’S PRESENCE: Gen. 49:1-7; 1 Sam. 28:1-11.
“Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.” 1 Sam 28:7. It is a fearful thing to walk out of God’s presence. How did Saul come to this point in his life? His rise in leadership began on a superlative note with all Israel longing to see him but his sunset ended on a gory note. How are the mighty fallen?

Like Saul who while yet alive was spoken of in the past because the glory had departed and every attempt using all available short cuts to amend the fallen state ended up in fiasco, He opted to take his own life. Many have gone the same way.

Similarly too, Judah had wondered away from God. Every step, action and move taken to regain her place and position ended in futility. Pride had succeeded in supervising her fall. The glory is gone, ICHABOD was written all over the city and Jerusalem had gone into perpetual backsliding without any remorse. Jer. 8:5. The wise men, the priests and the prophets all had their fair share of the blame. They had forsaken the work of the Lord and now dealt falsely in spiritual matters. Jer. 8:9-10.

The peak of the frustration came when the leaders made a public call to her citizens saying, “let us go into the fortified cities and perish there. See Jer. 8:14-15. This perfectly describes a troubled nation with confused leaders and frustrated people. No peace treaty can help when Hope is lost. All they could hear were the voices of the enemies and the consequences of their unwise choices catching up with them as a national suicide.

JEREMIAH’S GRIEF: Jer. 8:18-22.
The worst that can happen to a man is to live without knowing the day of his visitation. So it was for Judah who had wasted all her years until the harvest past and the summer ended without them making peace with the Lord. How well is your soul? Not your bank account nor your earthly possession! Where are the Hitler’s, Joseph Stalin’s that suppressed their generations? It is said of Napoleon Bonarparte, one that brought the greatest revolution in the French Republic that at the peak of his political accomplishment he said “I have no need of France but France needs me”. Mark 8:36-37. How did he end up? Redemption Ministries Weekly Bible Study 8th June 2021

LESSONS FROM THE STUDY
1. You can always avert crisis if you trust and hand over your life to God. Judah could have averted this if they had believed the prophet. Jer. 9:3; Matt 11:28.
2. Any attempt to walk away from the church and lean on your own understanding can be very devastating. Saul never recovered from going down until he ended up in the grave through suicide.
3. The contention between Paul and Barnabas brought about a major setback in the life of Barnabas as his choice to move on without the recommendation of the church nor seeking for the amicable resolution of the conflict ended his ministry on a questionable note! Nothing was heard of him hereafter. Acts 15:39-40.

4. When choices go wrong, people are bound to suffer the consequences. Hence, choose wisely.
5. Recall that even at the beginning, doubt attended or necessitated the rupture of divine / human relationship. Did you say? Gen. 3:1 then followed by the decision to test the veracity of what God said. Where you are now is a function of various options you made in life.
