Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 1 April 2023

Betrayal by anyone is terrible, but betrayal by a close friend or relative must be devastating to say the least (Psalm 41:9). Vs.18-21 show how heavy the impending betrayal was on Jesus’ heart, so he shared this with his disciples (v.19). What do you think Judas Iscariot should have done at this time? Note that though, Jesus knew the disciple who will betray Him, He kept it secret.

Judas had the opportunity to repent from, and discontinue this evil pursuit, but he did not. The greatest tragedy that could befall any man is hardness of heart and refusal to change even when he knows the path he has chosen leads to eternal damnation (Proverbs 29:1; cf. Hebrews 10:26). No wonder, Christ exclaimed, “Woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed” (v.21).

The Passover was a time of sober reflection for the Jews as they remember their deliverance from slavery. Similarly, the Lord’s Supper, inaugurated by Jesus on the night of His betrayal represents a time to reflect on the sacrifice Jesus made to deliver us from sin and Satan (vs.22-26).

Practice/Word Application
And so: Dear Lord, deliver me from hardness of heart and every selfish interest that can cause me to betray you.
