Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 11 February 2024

Having chosen to honour God the Father, Jesus encountered much resistance and opposition, even from seemingly religious people (see 2 Timothy 3:12). They called Him names, insulted, and attacked Him, even calling Him a Samaritan (i.e., an outcast) and demon-possessed (v.48). Satan never gives up, nor will he allow believers to continue giving God glory unchallenged. Part of giving God glory was to remain pure and holy, so that even His opponents could not charge Him with sin (v.46).

“Before Abraham was, I AM” (v.58). The Jews recognised the implications of this statement. First, Jesus was claiming to be greater than Abraham, their patriarch. Secondly, He was claiming to be more than who they were seeing; to have existed from eternity (v.57). Thirdly, “I AM” is God’s personal name (Exodus 3:14). To claim that title is to declare himself Jehovah.

That was too much for the Jews to take. But the truth is that, although Abraham was indeed a great man, a man of faith (Hebrews 11:8), the Lord Jesus, the Son of God, existed before man was created (John 1:2). He is not only alive now, but He is able to give life to those who trust in Him. This is why He could make the promise in v.51.
Despite who Jesus is, notice His humility in vs.50&54. Let us learn from the Lord Jesus how to speak the truth humbly but confidently.

ERE THE BLUE HEAV’NS WERE STRETCHED ABROAD
1. Ere the blue heav’ns were stretched abroad,
From everlasting was the Word:
With God He was; the Word was God,
And must divinely be adored.

2. By His own power were all things made;
By Him supported all things stand;
He is the whole creation’s head,
And angels fly at His command.

3. Ere sin was born, or Satan fell,
He led the host of morning stars:
Thy generation who can tell,
Or count the numbers of Thy years?

4. But lo, He leaves those heav’nly forms,
The Word descends and dwells in clay,
That He may hold converse with worms,
Dressed in such feeble flesh as they.

5. Mortals with joy beheld His face,
The eternal Father’s only Son;
How full of truth! how full of grace!
When thro’ His eyes the Godhead shone.

6. Archangels leave their high abode
To learn new mysteries here, and tell
The loves of our descending God,
The glories of Immanuel.

Closing Prayer
Jesus, we extol you. We proclaim you are the Lord.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Joshua 21:44
“And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.”
