(a) The Problem: King David was conscious that he had sinned and that his sufferings were just discipline from God (vs.4,18). That suffering weighed him down as it came from different directions.
It came directly from God (vs.1-2), from his enemies (vs.12,19), and even from people who hate him for no reason at all (vs.19-20). It affected him physically in his body (vs.5-8), and mentally in his emotions (vs.6,8-9), and also socially in his relationships (v.11). We too can have similar experiences (Hebrews 12:5-8). When we do, King David sets us a good example of how to respond. (b) The answer: King David’s response was to turn back to the Lord.
First, he freely admits to his wrongdoing (vs.4,18). Are we quick to own up when we do wrong? Or do we find excuses and shift the blame to someone else like Adam did in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:12)? David expresses his feelings freely and frankly (vs.5, 7-8), He presents his requests clearly (vs.1,16, 21-22), and this he does with confident assurance (v.15). Thankfully, we too have the assurance that God will always answer us in His love and grace (Romans 8:32).
