Scripture Union Daily Guide 13th January 2022 Devotional Note

Nebuchadnezzar initially captured Jerusalem and exiled key people from there to Babylon. He then installed Zedekiah as his vassal (or subordinate) king. Zedekiah and the remnant rebelled against Nebuchadnezzar and the result was the report we have in v.21 (see 2 Kings 24:20‐25:10). But it would appear the people still refused to learn the right lessons. It is true that the land was given to them as an inheritance being Abraham’s descendants, but they failed to keep the condition of retention (vs.25‐26).

Their failure to repent and change their ways brought upon them more disasters (vs.27‐28). The punishment continued until they turn back from their evil ways to worship the Lord. Like the people of Israel, are we claiming God’s promises but failing to meet His conditions for enjoying these blessings? God reserves punishment for sinners and not protection. If we want to lay claim to God’s grace and mercy, then we must be free from sin. We should be ready to serve God with all seriousness and to always obey His word (vs.31‐32).

Practice/Word Application
And so: Meditate on James 1:22-25.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Dear Lord, give me a heart that trembles at your word.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
Luke 1:74‐75; Genesis 20,21, Galatians 6
