Scripture Union Daily Guide 13th February 2025 Outline

Remember God’s offer to Moses in Numbers 14:10-12. Imagine you were Moses and God were to make the same offer to you, how would you have responded? Added to that is the fact that the people had totally rejected him as their leader and decided to go with another leader back to Egypt. Instead of jumping at it, note his concern for the honour of God’s name (Numbers 14:13-16), and his love and concern for his rebellious people (Numbers 14:19). We see here three characteristics of an effective intercessor.

(1) He does not focus on his selfish ambition.
(2) He has a deep concern for the people for whom he intercedes.
(3) He has intimate knowledge of the Lord and is more concerned for His honour and reputation among the unbelievers. Notice the basis of his appeal and prayer (Numbers 14:18, compare Exodus 34:6-7). It is not a surprise that God heard his prayer and pardoned the people.

He did not destroy the whole nation but there was a price to pay (Numbers 14:21-23). Those who declared their unwillingness to enter the Promised Land were barred from entering it. God in His mercy forgives our sins. However, sin leaves scars (cf. 2 Samuel 12:13-14). We must not persist in rebellion lest we miss the blessings that accompany godly living.
