SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE 14TH JANUARY 2021

Many of the proverbs in our reading today have to do with helping people to live together peacefully. Again, bear in mind that this is poetry with wise sayings pertaining to our life on this earth. We need to understand what it meant at the time and find out how we can apply the principles relevantly to our current situations. For example, the underlying principle in v.18 is to settle disputes.

But, rather than what the verse indicates, we must consider other methods of settling disputes. God has given each of us a unique gift or talent. It is these gifts, if well developed and utilised, that will bring you into the limelight and usher you before Kings and prominent people. We should maintain a good spirit at all times and not allow ourselves to be shattered by any hazard (v.14; cf. Prov. 15: 13; 17: 22).

Vs.15, 21 and 22 speak of the value of knowledge, the power of the tongue, and the favour of finding a good wife. These things do not just happen but each of them requires personal action from us.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Practice/Word Application:
• So What? What steps are you taking to find the good wife or husband; and if you have found one, what are you doing to help him/her to be even better?

Closing Prayer:
• Pray today especially for the person you have married or the person you will one day marry. • Pray for the political leaders of your country to imbibe the virtues of truth, honesty and compassion for their citizens.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Jeremiah 20:11 – But the Lord is with me as a mighty, awesome One. Therefore my persecutors will stumble, and will not prevail. They will be greatly ashamed, for they will not prosper. Their everlasting confusion will never be forgotten.

Bible In One Year: Gen. 33-35; Rom. 11:19-36
