Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 20 April 2023

Every person is made in God’s image. It does not matter what position he/she holds in life. The master is not more preferred by God than the servant. Everybody is crowned with God’s glory and made ruler over His creation (Psalm 8:5-6). In Israel’s labour system, slaves were acceptable but were to be treated with dignity. They would not remain as slaves perpetually. Freedom is automatically offered in the seventh year. However, notice the exception to this rule in vs.4-7.

Also notice the woman’s right in marriage (vs.7-11). Several cultures in Africa don’t seem to recognize the rights of married women. Christian husbands must make a difference and show to others how to treat women by their godly examples (cf. Ephesians 5:21-33).

The sanctity of life is further affirmed in vs.12-17. We have no excuse if we deliberately take the life of other human beings. Yet we often do that today during political and religious riots, through mob lynching, ethnic cleansing and tribal fighting. Vs.15&17 remind us of Exodus 20:12. We must not lose our cultural heritage of respect for elders.
