Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 21 April 2023
Notice in vs.18-19 that God values everyone’s time; whether innocent or guilty! Anyone who injures an adversary must pay for the cost of quality treatment and the time loss while the injured is away from meaningful livelihood activities.
When slavery was practised, fellow humans were owned as property by individuals and they could be treated in whatever way that suits their master. Human dignity is at God’s heart (vs.20-21,26). Thank God that slavery is now outlawed in our nations. But how do we treat people who work for us or are under our authority?

In a generation when vengeance, jungle justice, increased violence and impunity overwhelm us, we can learn from vs.22-25 not to take the law into our hands but to let the courts do their work in dealing with every act of violation of rights. Animals that have violent tendency such as bulls and dogs need to be properly tamed otherwise, they can cause severe injury or even death.
Similarly, dogs and cats that can be reservoirs of deadly infections such as rabies need to be properly vaccinated to avoid spreading epidemics among the animals and even to humans for infections that can be passed to humans (zoonosis). Note the punishment of the owner of a dangerous animal if he neglects to keep it under control (vs.28-30).
