TODAY’S TOPIC: A HARD TEACHING

Opening Prayer: May the meditation of my heart be acceptable unto you, O Lord as I read from your word.

SCRIPTURE: JOHN 6:60-71

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Jesus now clarifies what ‘eating and drinking’ means. It is not to cut Him up in pieces and eat His flesh. That will count for nothing. Only a spiritual understanding is profitable (vs.62, 63). Jesus’ teaching was “hard sayings” to those who are not getting what they want from Him. People follow Jesus for different reasons.

Many of these early disciples were not genuine seekers and so, they readily turned back (v.66). Their faith was not genuine as they perhaps followed Jesus only because of the physical benefits He gave them, such as healing and food. Others probably stopped following because they genuinely could not make sense of His teachings. It is the Holy Spirit who illuminates our minds with the teachings of Christ.

In response to Jesus’ question, ‘will you also go away’, notice Peter’s profound statement of faith on behalf of the disciples (vs.68-69). Thus, the disciples stand as examples to us in their willingness to follow Him even if they don’t understand it all. Albeit Jesus is never deceived, not even by Peter’s inspiring statement (see v.70 and compare 2:23-25).

Practice/Word Application
And so? Occasions will come in our lives when we must choose whether to continue in the faith or not. Can our Lord rely on you even if others desert Him?

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

EVERY BRIDGE IS BURNED BEHIND ME
1. Since I started out to find Thee,
Since I to the cross did flee,
Every bridge is burned behind me;
I will never turn from Thee.

Refrain
Strengthen all the ties that bind me
Closer, closer, Lord to Thee,
Every bridge is burned behind me;
Thine I evermore will be.

2. Thou didst hear my plea so kindly;
Thou didst grant me so much grace,
Every bridge is burned behind me;
I will ne’er my steps retrace.

3. Cares of life perplex and grind me,
Yet I keep the narrow way.
Every bridge is burned behind me;
I from Thee will never stray.

4. All in All I ever find Thee,
Savior, Lover, Brother, Friend,
Every bridge is burned behind me;
I will serve Thee to the end.

Closing Prayer
Lord, may your grace abound for me to follow you in bearable and unbearable situations.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Deuteronomy 11:12
“A land which the LORD thy God careth for: the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.”
