Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 24 April 2023
How do you understand v.1a? “False reports” include rumours, propaganda, fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.
It also includes exaggeration, posting, forwarding, sharing or tagging of any unverified information as we often do on the social media today! The clear instruction is, “Do not spread false reports.” It is important that we heed the command in v.2 to desist from sheepishly following the crowd to do wrong things. God hates false witness irrespective of the motive behind it. False witness breeds injustice and puts the innocent at a disadvantaged position.

We may not have had experience in our own lives of being aliens or refugees outside the land of our birth, but the teaching in v.9 should inform our attitudes and action with regard to such an unfortunate situation, especially when people are forcefully displaced because of war, famine etc.
God instituted the Sabbath to demonstrate His care for all His creation (vs.9-12). While the farmland is left uncultivated in the seventh year, it rests and regains fertility, and the strangers and wild animals are at liberty to go there and find food from the crops that survive from previous years. Every seventh day of the week is set apart for everyone including your maid to rest.
