Picking the grain of wheat from the farm and eating the kernel was not a problem. It was legitimate. According to the Pharisees’ interpretation of the Sabbath law, the disciples were defiling the Sabbath by working, that is, harvesting and threshing grain. What should the disciples do instead, go hungry on Sabbath day or even die of hunger if need be? It is the reason Jesus cited the example of David and his men (vs.3‐4, cf. 1 Samuel 21:1‐6). In the same way, the healing of the paralytic on the Sabbath was against their interpretation of the Sabbath law even when the “work” only involved Jesus speaking the word (vs.10‐11).

Their redefinition of keeping the Sabbath holy had become a big noose (adjustable loop) around the people’s necks. That was what Jesus sought to correct, hence His claim in v.5. After all, He, being God, made the Law. His interpretation of it should take precedence. It is important for us too not to be modern day Pharisees by judging people based on what they eat, drink or even wear without due regard to New Testament teaching, (Mark 7:18‐20; Romans 14:17; 21).

Practice/Word Application
So what? ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath’ (Mark 2:27). ‘It is for freedom Christ has set us free’ (Galatians 5:1). What do these verses and the passage teach us about man‐made laws? Thank God for the freedom we have in Christ Jesus.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Father, grant me proper interpretation of your word and laws.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
Deuteronomy 33:25 ‐ 33:28; Genesis 44, 45, Psalms 20
