Scripture Union Daily Guide 26th February 2021 Devotional – Do Not Trivialise The Gospel

You are reading Scripture Union Daily Guide for Today Friday 26th February 2021. May you be blessed as you read on.

TOPIC: DO NOT TRIVIALISE THE GOSPEL

OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, expose me to your truth as I read your word in Jesus name.

SCRIPTURE: Hebrew 2:1-9

1We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. 4God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. 5It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? 7You made them a littlelower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor 8and put everything under their feet.” In putting everything under them,God left nothing that is not subject to them.Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them.9But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Question(s) for Reflection:
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

OUTLINE: SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE 26TH FEBRUARY 2021 DEVOTIONAL

The Mosaic Law could not provide a competent and permanent solution for sin. But God in His mercy and grace provided a better solution through Jesus Christ. However, because salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ seemed so simple, the so-called wise men of the world despise it (Romans 1:16b). The writer of Hebrews therefore cautions us to be careful how we respond to the gospel (v.1). What are the reasons for this caution (vs.2-4)?

Humanly speaking, it seems foolish that the creator of all things (Colossians 1:16-17) could become human and pass through all the suffering that He experienced (Philippians 2:5-8). But He went through all of it in order to restore us to our original position in the plan of God, a position we lost in the Garden of Eden (vs.5-8 cf. Genesis 1:26-28). Jesus made Himself temporarily lower than the angel (i.e. becoming man) just to purchase our salvation.

He tasted suffering and death not for any sin of His but for our sins (v.9). To take such a magnanimous sacrifice lightly shall make us liable to a just judgment from God.

Practice/Word Application:
• So: Have you availed yourself of God’s great salvation?
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer:
• Thank you, dear Lord, for tasting death to save me from eternal death.
• Pray for Christian writers to have more inspiration.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Colossians 1:13 – For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son,

Bible Reading: Ex. 23-24; 2 Thess. 2
