Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 27 January 2024
The people had not heeded the earlier call to repentance (vs.6,14, and 15), but appeared to be looking forward to the Day of the Lord (v.18). Hence the Day of the Lord will bring sorrow from which they will surely not escape (vs.19-20).
They had assumed that provided they were carrying out their religious duties, bringing offerings to God, all will be well with them. But they were proved wrong (vs.21-23). God does not delight in sacrifices that are not from a humble and repentant heart (Psalm 51:17). We too may make the same mistake today. We may fail to heed God’s call for repentance and yielding our lives to Jesus (Revelation 3:20).
It is wrong to think that if we only attend Church regularly, sing praises to God, pay our tithes and offerings, we would be prepared for the Day of our Lord’s return, and even long for that day. We would meet the same fate as the Israelites (v.18b).
What does v.25 tell us about God? Similarly, we are saved by grace through faith and not by works so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8-9). But the way we live must show that we have been saved (v.21).
