The possibility of believers being tortured by evil men, just like sheep among wolves, is so obvious that Jesus prepares Christians ahead of such experiences. After all, the world did not receive Him when He first manifested Himself to mankind in human form (John 1:10,11). His aim was to prepare His own to face persecution with courage. From vs.17, 18, 21, 28, identify the persecutors of followers of Christ.

Note that close relations could be your persecutors because of Christ. It is more disheartening when church leaders lead in the opposition of the gospel. Jesus never hides how opposition for His sake could lead to the loss of the disciple’ lives (v.21). Are these not capable of frightening believers to the extent they would wish to give up following Jesus? Yes, they are.

But Jesus quickly promises His ever-present help. Read vs.19, 20, 26a, 28a. What are other reasons Christians should not be afraid or surprised when the world is hostile to them in the course of preaching the gospel (vs.24, 25)? If Jesus, our Master, was seriously misunderstood and called names, how do we expect to be treated differently? Also read John 15:18.

Closing Prayer:
• Thank God for making provision for you to withstand opposition and ask God to sustain Christians who are going through persecution all over the world presently.
• Pray for deeper knowledge in your studies.

Prayer For The Week: Pray for the spiritual health of Nigerian Christians and leaders and for the brethren in business that their lives will show living sacrifices and that the glory of the Lord will reflect in all they do. Pray for Peace House Revival Labor.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Jeremiah 20:13 (esv) – Sing to the LORD; praise the LORD! For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hand of evildoers.
