Opening Prayer: My dear heavenly Father, as I study your word, let it be a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

Scripture: Joel 2:18-32

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit
• Q 4: Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?

Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 8 March 2023

After the warning and imagery of the day of the Lord we have reflected on so far, we see signs of hope with God’s mercy and promise in today’s text. When we repent of our sins, God is faithful and just both to forgive and restore. See v.19 for the implication of restoration. Beyond this, God promises to protect His people (v.20). Beyond the season of devastation and mourning, God declares, ‘do not be afraid, land of Judah; be glad and rejoice’ (v.21).

When our relationship is right with God, we experience peace and joy. Please note that spiritual restoration also has implications for the environment and all of God’s creation. What should Joel’s reference to wild animals, pastures in the wilderness and trees bearing fruit say to us? Are these only symbolic illustration or do they include our responsibility for all things in life and nature, especially bearing in mind that ‘all of creation longs for redemption’ (see Romans 8:22)?

We also read of the promise of God’s outpouring of His Holy Spirit which has been fulfilled today (vs.28-29). Also read Acts 2 later in the day, today.
