SCRIPTURE: JOHN 8:21-30

• Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
• Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 9th February 2024
Jesus’ warning in v.21 is enough to trouble any sober person but, sadly, see how His listeners misinterpreted it (v.22). Jesus was soon to depart to the Father after crucifixion and resurrection, and up until then, they had not yet believed in Him. Anyone who dies in his/her sins is doomed forever (vs.23-24).
V.28, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man…” This is the plainest statement Jesus had yet made in public to show the way He would be killed. “Lifted up” was unmistakably synonymous with “crucifixion”. Once He was crucified, His true identity would be more evident. As He predicted, thousands of Jews in Jerusalem indeed received Him as their Messiah within a few weeks of His death and resurrection (Acts 2:37-41; 47; 4:4).
It can be tempting to abandon convictions, especially when faced with so much opposition and unbelief. Many mission programmes, outreaches and serious projects have been abandoned due to declining zeal and faith.
Practice/Word Application
And so: Are you facing serious challenges to your faith, especially concerning God’s calling on your life? Remember Jesus’ resolve to always do what pleases God, and not to please self or man.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to obey and to keep living daily to please you even when many are against me.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalms 68:35
“O God, thou art terrible out of thy holy places: the God of Israel is he that giveth strength and power unto his people. Blessed be God.”
