Scripture Union Daily Guide 9 November 2025 Outline
How would you feel if someone you loved and cherished suddenly turned their back on you? How do Jeremiah 2:5-8 describe the attitude of Israel to their covenant with God and His benevolence acts toward them?
The Israelites were initially holy and pleasing to God. Their dedication afforded them the enjoyment of God’s defence (Jeremiah 2:2-3). It is generally expected that the two parties in a relationship would strive to be faithful. However, Israel soon strayed away from God for no just reason. They deserted God for worthless idols and became worthless like the idols they worshipped (Jeremiah 2:5).
How are people in our generation straying away from God today and what idols are they embracing? Take note that if you don’t worship God, whatever you choose to worship will be less than God (Jeremiah 2:11-13). Read Jeremiah 2:9 again and note that the consequences of our actions and inaction do not affect us alone. It also affects generations unborn. When Israel turned to worthless idols, they lost God’s defence and suffered attacks and defeat from their neighbours (Jeremiah 2:16-19).

Trust and Obey
1. When we walk with the Lord
In the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Refrain
Trust and obey,
For there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey.
2. Not a shadow can rise,
Not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear,
Not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.
3. Not a burden we bear,
Not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss,
Not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.
4. But we never can prove
The delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows,
For the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.
5. Then in fellowship sweet
We will sit at His feet.
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way.
What He says we will do,
Where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.
Closing Prayer
Oh Lord, help me not to stray from you so that I can enjoy your defence.
