THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
God cares about my heart more than my outward appearance.
SCRIPTURE
The Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. – 1 Samuel 16:7 (KJV)
When I was in university, I was given cans of milk to take to school. I took care to clean the cans regularly and kept them in a secure place, but I didn’t consume the milk for several months. I thought that if the cans were clean and attractive on the outside, the milk inside would be okay. However, when I eventually opened one of the cans, I was surprised to see that the milk had expired and turned sour. Though outwardly the cans looked fine, the contents were unattractive and unusable.
Many times we take care of our outward appearance, ensuring that we look good. Yet we less frequently turn our attention inward. Many times we leave our hearts filled with malice, envy, grudges, deceit, or pride instead of love. Even when our outward appearance is beautiful, our hearts may not be.
God is concerned with what is inward. God wants us to have loving and forgiving hearts. David’s brothers appeared good from the outside, but God rejected them because of their hearts. We please God when we look inward and care for our hearts as much as we care for our outward appearance.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, create in us a right spirit. Help us to see the harmful things we harbor in our hearts and to let them go. Amen.
