Isaiah 55:8-13

God’s ways are always the best ways.

To trust God’s ways

“My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” – Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV)

When I was young, my mother taught me how to knit and cross-stitch. These skills have given me many hours of pleasure through the years. I am now in my seventies, and a friend of mine recently taught me how to crochet. I started out by making some simple potholders. But after that, I began crocheting a bedspread of all things!

My friend showed me an intricate pattern that has been used for generations. When I first started, it looked like just a random group of knots and twists. Every patch I crocheted seemed mismatched and not very pretty. But when I stitched the patches together, I saw a beautiful design that I could not see when I began.

This reminds me of the times in my life when I have experienced challenges. When I am in the middle of challenges, it is impossible for me to determine a purpose in my situation. I wonder, Why is this happening to me? But in time, God always shows me a larger picture. As the apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 13:12, “Now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”

Dear God, thank you that your thoughts are higher than ours and for caring for us with your everlasting love. Amen.
