TODAY’S READING
John 11:28-37

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Jesus sits with us in our grief.

Jesus wept. – John 11:35 (KJV)

“There is nothing more they can do.” When my daughter told me her husband was coming home on hospice, I couldn’t find the words to pray. How could I put into words the loss of a young life cut short by cancer? How could I explain the sadness of those who loved him? I felt Jesus couldn’t understand my pain.

Then I read the passage where Jesus arrived in Bethany after his friend Lazarus died. Even though Jesus would ultimately raise Lazarus and triumph over death, he sat and wept. Jesus knew the pain that came from the death of a loved one. He knew the sadness from being with others who mourn. Jesus knew the pain I felt, and, like me, he cried. Then he dried his eyes and set about comforting others and doing the will of the Father.

Through this loss, I’ve learned that when I hurt, Jesus hurts. He understands my pain. He doesn’t always fix it; sometimes he just sits with me. This knowledge that Jesus understands my grief allows me to lean on him through prayer. I know that Jesus mourned like me and that I will ultimately be reunited with my loved ones in heaven.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, walk with us through our pain. Help us to take comfort in both your presence and your ultimate victory over death. Amen.

PRAYER FOCUS
Those who are grieving
