CHURCH OF THE FIRSTBORN
WEEKLY BIBLE STUDY
October 20, 2021
TOPIC: REKINDLING YOUR FIRST LOVE (5) HOW CAN I RETURN TO MY FIRST LOVE?
TEXT: JOHN 13:34-35; 15:11-15; ROMANS 13:10-14; EPHESIANS 4:23-24
Memory Verse: “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.” Rev. 2:4-5.
We have defined the first love as the unspeakable joy and delight that an individual expresses when he receives Christ. It is this joy that brings him into the reality of the new found relationship without restrains or reservations. However, along life’s journey. This joyous experience is challenged, choked and cheated by the cares of this world thus bringing It under contempt and compromise.

In handling this dilemma in the church at Ephesus Jesus proffered a profound step by step approach to rekindling the first love. In His expression, He said: REMEMBER therefore from whence thou art fallen, and REPENT, and DO THE FIRST WORKS; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent
1. REMEMBER: The skill of calling to remembrance the things we did at inception of salvation is the greatest success tool we need and have in order to retrace our steps. These are the things that propped up spontaneously and propelled us to the great heights of love you will remember.
• How much of God you cherished desiring to dwell in His House all the days of your life.
Ps 23:6; 27:4.
• How precious you cherished weekly meetings no matter how long and when such meetings were to hold. Jer. 15:16; Ps 119:17-18, 72; 2 Tim 2:15; Rev. 10:10.
• You can only fondly remember how you will take permission from the office to meet up with church activities at the expense of any form of financial deductions that your office may implement but today you the reverse is true as you rather take permission from the church (if at all you even inform the church) to meet up with office engagements. What a paradox!
• In applying for any job, you will specify that you can only accept the offer if Wednesday / Tuesday evening being Bible study period and Thursday/Friday evening being miracle service time will be available for YOUR GOD!
• You will also remember with tears (if at all the tears are still there) how you wept, frowned whenever you missed Bible study and you will visit a fellow brother or sister who attended to secure the outline or at best copy the quotations to go through like a typical Berean Christian.
You also can remember how distance or no transport was never an excuse to be absent from church. Those good days when GMHS was HQ and we all had the obligation to be there before going to our offices. Now that it has been brought near you, what has happened?
Discussion
*Kindly state other things worth remembering to go back to your first love.
Jesus’ intention was to have us remember so that can be better informed to make authentic decision and amends.
2. REPENT: Repentance is always a lifetime opportunity one possesses as long as he has breathe. Jesus subjected the church at Ephesus to repent of all they remembered that once positioned them on God’s classic time line of LOVE. It is the only viable link that re-establishes us with the master. It is not enough to remember how you were once a regular member in weekly Bible studies. Your ability to REPENT from whatever has stolen this zeal, commitment and return to the Lord is what is commendable. This process requires change of mind, heart and attitude.
3. DO THE FIRST WORKS: Ps. 27:4; Phil. 4:6-7; 1 Pet. 2:2-3. It is this first works that put us on the trail blazers scale. To do the works means to deliberately and purposefully return to where you first met Him and the relationship that propelled you to action. Re-order your priorities as it was before that earned you Christ’s commendation. You will need to be deliberate, put in effort where coldness abound, engaging in compulsory personal study of the word, listening to messages not only songs, sharing tracts encouraging one another in the Lord and not always ready with the piercing KNIFE EDGE of criticism. Other elements of doing the first work include: serving the Lord faithfully, fasting, praying, giving for the work, visiting those that are growing cold, etc.
