TODAY’S TOPIC: WORDS AND ACTIONS

SCRIPTURE: Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit. – Matthew 21:43

The elders may have regarded Jesus as a prophet, but many also surely regarded him as an annoying upstart. Who was he to judge them, to imply by the parable of the tenants that they planned to destroy God’s son? After all, they knew religious law and teachings and followed them scrupulously. What could be more important than that?

Jesus knew that that wasn’t all the Almighty desired of him or of the people. His ministry fulfilled the law and prophecies by focusing on the two greatest commandments: loving God and loving our neighbors as ourselves. Gaining for us the hope of eternal life wasn’t theoretical for Jesus; he showed that through his earthly death, confident in God’s promise. And when we open ourselves up to a faith that does more than spout words, we open ourselves up to producing fruit for the kingdom.

Jesus, help me to live more than a theoretical faith life.
