Scripture: For whoever is not against us is for us. – Mark 9:40

Message: Catholic Daily Devotional 23 February 2022

For centuries following the Reformation, the Christian world witnessed minimal religious cooperation between Protestants and Catholics. Yet for Catholics, since the close of the Second Vatican Council in 1965, there has been a clear emphasis on increasing a renewed sense of unity between Christians that we know as ecumenism. This makes us stronger—for it calls us to be more informed about our faith plus invites us to be respectful of the faith of others.

I have often reflected on Mark 9:40 as a kind of nucleus of ecumenism, and I have carried that verse in my wallet for many years. This short statement by Jesus is an excellent guideline for meeting with area pastors, pulpit exchanges, denomination discussions and joint projects with Christian congregations. Jesus clearly explains the ecumenical spirit: While we may all be doing good deeds—though from different faith backgrounds—don’t separate but cooperate with each other, for the sake of love and unity in the world. – Fr. James McKarns
