According to the Gospel, Jesus did not scrutinize the crowd to determine who did or did not deserve to be fed. On both a physical and spiritual level, he simply saw a need and filled it. This seems to be in direct contrast to our inclination to weigh whether someone is acceptable.
After decades of praying for a new heart, I still make snap judgments. For example, last week I was waiting for my husband at a shopping mall and looking for somewhere to sit when, to my surprise, a teenager with pierced ears and covered in tattoos got up from a bench and offered me his seat. It was another moment of conversion for me as I recognized I had judged someone from outward appearances.
Is there a bias you struggle with?
Risen Christ, may I see as you see. – Terri Mifek
