CATHOLIC DAILY DEVOTIONAL TODAY 15TH MARCH 2022 TUESDAY
TODAY’S TOPIC: Unreasonable Expectations
SCRIPTURE: For they preach but do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them. Matthew 23:3-4
The other day I was chatting with someone who was eager to tell me about her various religious practices and her personal relationship with Jesus. When I asked about her family, she sighed and listed the ways her family had failed to live up to her ideals. She admitted that her grown children are no longer in relationship with her.
At times, in our desire to grow closer to God, there is a temptation to fall into a reward-and-punishment mindset. We may put unreasonable expectations on others, as well as ourselves, while ignoring and sometimes adding to others’ sufferings. If we attempt to judge and control other people, we may be living out of fear, not faith. Let’s not allow perfectionism to replace an authentic encounter with the God whose mercy is beyond our comprehension.
