Today’s Topic: Anger: A Tricky Emotion

Scripture: Know this, my dear brothers and sisters: everyone should be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger for anger does not accomplish the righteousness of God. – James 1:19-20

The old expression says that we have two ears and one mouth…we should listen twice as much as we speak.

As a therapist, I know that anger is a tricky emotion for people. If you stuff it and don’t allow it to dissipate, it will cause festering resentment, even illness. Some people have been taught that anger is bad or not allowed, then there is nowhere for it to go. This can cause hearts to close and calcify. Oddly, if we deny anger, it is often quicker to ignite and explode.

Anger itself is just an emotion, often an indicator of things we need to address, release or heal. If we are quick or irresponsible and mishandle our anger, that’s when anger turns unconsciously from emotion to action, often causing damage and pain. If we notice our anger and proceed slowly and curiously, we alchemize anger into fuel for transformation, healing and inspired action—and fulfill the righteousness of God. – Kristin Armstrong
