SCRIPTURE: Do you want proof, you ignoramus, that faith without works is useless? – James 2:20

They were having a rough year. Their house flooded, her husband lost his job, and their bills kept piling up. Drowning financially, they needed a life raft. We talked often. I helped when I could. But I knew I fell short the day she called to say thanks for an envelope left at their door. I asked her what she found. She thought I was being coy. She assumed the good Samaritan who dropped off five hundred dollars and a dozen gift cards was me.

I said, “Do you really think I would do that anonymously? I’m afraid I would want credit for it.” Well, that was enough to convince her. It also convinced me how stingy and self-serving I could be. Me, an ignoramus? I’m afraid so. But humbled by that reality, I prayed for more of God’s grace to make me a better life raft to those in need. – Gail Goleas
