Today’s Topic: The Tongue Is a Fire

Scripture: Consider how small a fire can set a huge forest ablaze. The tongue is also a fire. – James 3:5-6

When I read these lines from James, I’m reminded of last year when many Californian regions were engulfed in wildfires. Dozens of precious lives, thousands of acres of timber, hundreds of homes were lost in the ensuing blazes. Some of these huge fires were later discovered to have been set in motion by something as small as a carelessly tossed cigarette.

Deadly in a different way can be the damage caused by our words. Uttered without thought, hurled in anger, aimed in jealousy, cloaked in lies—our words can leave irreparable harm in their wake. We pray that our words will come from a place of compassion so that they will always and only heal, bless and prosper all those who receive them.

Loving God, help me to take a thoughtful pause before I speak.
