SCRIPTURE: And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church… Matthew 16:18

With these words, Jesus elevates Peter as the leader for the early Church, the first pope. Also of note is Jesus’ personal identification with “my Church.” For this is not Peter’s Church; it is and always will be the Church of Jesus Christ. Our Lord remains the Head of the Church, even as we celebrate this feast of the unbroken line of Peter’s successors on earth.

Jesus invests his authority in Peter, who, in reply to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?” powerfully asserted: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (verse 16). This moment is pivotal for Peter, yet it also challenges us to respond to the same question Jesus poses. For our personal and sacramental connection to Christ joins us to his body, his Church. In Christ the Church is revealed as both human and divine.

St. Peter, pray for us, that we may grow in fidelity to Christ and his Church.
