Saturday after Ash Wednesday
IF THIS…THEN THAT
If you honor [the sabbath] by not following your ways…
Then you shall delight in the LORD…
Isaiah 58:13, 14
Back when I took a computer class in high school, we wrote computer code by coloring in circles on punch cards with “If this…then that” commands. It took so many cards for just one program, I’d get a dent in my finger from the No. 2 pencil. But—oh the thrill—when the program worked! It was deeply satisfying to reap the reward of all that effort.
God gave us the code for joy by filling Isaiah 58 with “If this…then that” commands. If we do the work of removing oppression, feeding the hungry and honoring the sabbath, then God will guide us and give us plenty. In fact, the reward we’ll reap will elevate our joy so high we’ll ride on the heights of the earth and delight in the Lord.
Ever-Gracious God, thank you for giving us the code of conduct that leads to delight in you.
