MARCH 6, 2022
First Sunday of Lent
PUT TO THE TEST
SCRIPTURE: You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve. – Luke 4:8
Gospel and rock music aficionados will recall Bob Dylan’s 1979 Grammy-winning hit “Gotta Serve Somebody.” It speaks to a truth that Jesus chooses to confront as he is about to begin his public ministry and which confronts each one of us: Whom shall I serve? Jesus’ response to the three temptations sets him on a path to serving the will of his Father. It gives definition and clarity to his mission.
Recently, an elder member of my community told me that everything changed in his struggle with various diminishments when he accepted that God was asking him to accept this part of his life along with the rest. The choices we make at the beginning of this Lenten season help to anchor our lives. Amid our own temptations and struggles, may we choose to serve the Lord.
