CATHOLIC GOSPEL REFLECTIONS AND PRAYER 9 APRIL 2022
Topic: Let Go of the Old Life
Scripture: …[Caiaphas] prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, and not only for the nation, but also to gather into one the dispersed children of God. – John 11:51-52
The Pharisees recognized the power of Jesus from his many miracles. Little did they realize the transformative power of Jesus’ death for the sake of God’s children throughout eternity. Our Lenten sacrifices call our attention to the suffering of Jesus. Yet the Paschal Mystery invites us to look beyond his suffering and death with hope to new life in the Risen Christ.
Jesus gave up the life he had for new life, one he now shares with us. His death and resurrection offers a new life for each one of us. Each time we receive the Eucharist, we let go of our old life, “old wineskins,” and old ways of selfishness. We become One Body in Christ, no longer divided and dispersed.
May our hearts be prepared to let go of earthly grievances and strive to unite in perfect harmony as the children of God. – Deborah Meister
BIBLE READING: Ezekiel 37:21-28 • Jeremiah 31:10-13 John 11:45-56
Morning Prayers
Praise to you, O Lord, for the dawn of a new day. May the same Spirit that gives life to all of creation give me new life today. Open my heart in welcome to all that you wish to give me today. Bless the people I will encounter and help me to be an ambassador of your love for them. I pray that I may do your holy will in all things, through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen.
Lord, in the song of the birds I hear your delight in all of creation. In the warmth of the sunlight and the rain, I feel your care for all living things. In this new day, help me to let go of what happened yesterday and avoid too much concern about what will happen tomorrow. You have given me life this day, and with it I have everything I need to be happy. Help me to see my blessings and appreciate them. Amen.
Lord, I have obligations that I need to fulfill today, but to tell you the truth, I am not looking forward to it. I do, however, want to trust that all things will work together for good through your loving providence. May the mysterious action of the Holy Spirit transform all my actions into greater glory for you and for the salvation of the whole world. Amen.
Evening Prayers
Gracious God, you have given me the gift of life so that I might have the fullness of joy through Jesus, your Son. As this day draws to a close, I place myself in your hands. May all my worries, concerns and fears dissolve in confidence that your mercy will last forever. Renew in me the hope for a brighter future, faith in your providential care and love for those nearest to me, especially those who need it most. Help me to grow in trust that I have done the best I could and that you will be with me all the days of my life. Amen.
In the stillness of this night, I call to you, dear Lord, to make me aware of my faults and transgressions this day. In your mercy, help me heal any wounds my actions have caused; help me learn from my mistakes and omissions; give me the patience and compassion to attend to the needy, so that I may model your love in this world. Amen.
Lord, I place in your hands the unfinished business of the day, the hopes I had at its beginning and the regrets I have now at its end. Thank you for the times I felt your presence in the satisfaction of accomplishment and the enjoyment of your good creation, especially the people you have placed in my life. Amen.
