Scripture Union Daily Guide 11 April 2022 Devotional Outline
Yesterday, we read the account of Jesus and the disciples at the Last Supper! From there He led them into the Garden of Gethsemane (v.39). One of them surfaced in this Garden, not to pray with his Master, but to betray Him with a kiss (vs.47‐48). Jesus’ total dependence on the Father and prayer support of His friends is noteworthy here. Notice, however, the lack of burden for prayer exhibited by the disciples (vs.45‐46).
All the warnings could not motivate them to pray along with Jesus. Christ prayed through and received strength to submit to the Father’s will to face the devil squarely while the disciples were busy sleeping. The right approach to a persistent problem is perseverance in prayer (see vs.44‐46 and James 5:13). Do we have a burden for prayer when we participate in prayer vigils or we are just fulfilling all righteousness?
Read vs.49‐51 again and notice the reaction of Christ to the disciple’s violent self‐defence (see Luke 9:51‐56; 2 Corinthians 4:10‐12). Our Lord Jesus Christ, Stephen and others triumphed over ‘the hour and power of darkness’. We, the saints militant, are called to follow in their steps.
