Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 12 December 2023
Yesterday, we noted the sins we must put to death, get rid of, and take off as we live the Christian life. Today we will consider what we must replace them with, knowing that nature cannot sustain a vacuum. We put on or cloth ourselves with some actions.
They include compassion, that is, having concerns for the sufferings of others and being patient with people (v.12). Two hallmarks of practical Christianity are first, the ability to forgive others, thus following Christ’s example, who is our life, as we read yesterday in v.4. The second is to put on love, the love of Christ, which binds all things together in perfect unity (v.14). There is a close link between forgiveness, love, and peace. Forgiveness and love produce peace which leads to good works that please God (v.15).
Practical Christianity means loving others and building them up by the word of God (v.16). It also involves allowing the word of God to fill our hearts as we read, meditate on, and share it. Lastly, the Christian life should be characterized by gratefulness, thanksgiving, and worship, through what we do and say (v.17).
