SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE 15TH JULY 2022 DEVOTIONAL

Topic: Deserted But Not Alone

Opening Prayer: As I read through this passage dear Lord, let your word bring transformation to my life.

Scripture: Timothy 4:9‐22

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Many people failed to keep faith with Paul in his final days and in his hour of need, and this included some fellow workers (v.10). Luke, the doctor who had travelled with him on some of his missionary journeys was still with him. Notice the relationship he has now developed with Mark with whom he had lost patience in Acts 15:36‐39, leading to a split with Barnabas.

Paul prays for those who deserted him, (v.16), in contrast with his strong words against Alexander the Coppersmith, (v.14). The difference is that Alexander did not only fail to help Paul or stop at doing him personal harm. More than that, Paul says, “He strongly opposed our message.” This would block the way of others who need the gospel, which God never takes kindly! Compare Matthew 18:6; Galatians 1:8.

Paul ends his letter with the usual personal greetings and comments. Trophimus is of special interest, (v.20). Even though Paul had the gift of healing, he had to leave his fellow‐worker ill in Miletus. For reasons we do not understand, our prayers for healing do not always receive positive answers, but this does not change the fact that God hears and cares.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Lord, please help me never to desert those I need to help and support.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
Exodus 34:6; Amos 7‐9
