SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE 2 JUNE 2022 DEVOTIONAL

Topic: God is Faithful

Opening Prayer: Oh Lord, grant me divine guidance as I read and meditate on your word in Jesus name.

Scripture: Genesis 21:1‐21

Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

How do you feel when you finally receive something you have been expecting over a period of time? Abraham and Sarah had waited for the promised child for so long but after repeated promises, God finally fulfilled His promise (v.1). Note that Sarah conceived and gave birth to a son “at just the time God had said it would” (v.2). Waiting for answer to prayer can be tough.

We may be tempted to give up because the answer to our prayers had delayed, but when we finally receive the answer, it brings us joy and laughter. No wonder Abraham named the boy Isaac, which means laughter. When we find ourselves in situations of prolonged trials of faith and hopelessness, similar to that of Abraham and Sarah, let’s learn to keep believing God (Romans 4:18‐20), being rest assured that He is faithful, and He will fulfil His promises to us at His own time (Habakkuk 2:2‐3).

Observe that Ishmael (born by the scheming of Abraham and Sarah) had to be expelled so he will not interfere with God’s covenant promise (vs.8‐14). What can we learn from this? Holding on to the sinful nature can hinder the fulfilment of God’s promise in your life (Romans 8:2‐8).

See Galatians 4:21‐31 for clearer understanding of the spiritual dimension of this story.

Practice/Word Application
And so: We are justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law: for by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified. Thank God for His redemption.
