Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 21 November 2023
We ended yesterday’s meditation with Paul’s charge to shun worrying. In addition to the three things he commends we should instead do, we have an additional antidote in today’s passage. See this in vs.11-13. Contentment is a key to help us deal with worry. Lack of contentment drives people, including many men of God, to do things that may eventually ruin their calling. With contentment also, we will avoid ‘building our castle in the air’. We will depend on the Lord to meet our needs not our wants (v.19). So Christian ministers in particular should never be driven by selfish desires.
This is, however, one side of the coin. The other side is the responsibility of believers never to neglect but seek to provide for the needs of God’s servants. Like the Philippians, we must work at sending aid to ‘our Pauls’ again and again to meet their needs so they can focus on ministry. Missionary support is honoured and accepted by God as an “odour of a sweet-smelling sacrifice ….“ (v.8). Our giving to support any faithful, committed missionary or church worker is hence an offering unto God.
